I started tweeting on Twitter recently: It's like a microblog. You can tell everyone everything you're doing all day long. What could be better?

I've been thinking a little bit of why it's popular. Twitter, and personal blogs and Facebook and all of this seem somehow related. It seems to me to be more about self expression than communication. We are telling the world who we are. Perhaps it makes us feel bigger, in a world so packed with people and information and choices that we are otherwise lost and anonymous. All this accompanied by a faint, and often dissapointed hope for communcation and community. Uprooted from our hometowns by college and jobs and the constant movement that accompanies modern life, are we putting out roots in the internet?

I don't know. It's still inexplicably fun.
